Position:       Assistant Public Defender IV

Location:      Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit

Job Description and Requirements:

Assistant Public Defender IV

The Public Defender Office for the Stone Mountain Circuit (DeKalb County) is seeking a zealous, dedicated, and experienced appellate litigator.  The attorney chosen for this position will combine a demonstrated dedication to the representation of indigent clients with strong research, writing, and litigation skills.  The attorney will provide exceptional representation to our clients before the trial and all appellate courts.  An additional requirement of this position is the ability to quickly and accurately provide research assistance to our trial lawyers.  Preferred qualifications include:

A demonstrated commitment to zealous and comprehensive indigent defense

At least five years criminal defense litigation experience

Strong issue identification, research, writing and oral advocacy skills

Ability to work independently and effectively  manage a significant caseload

Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment

Ability to supervise and mentor law students

Applications are now being accepted for an assistant public defender III or IV position in the Major Crimes Division. Assistant public defenders are employees of the executive branch of the State of Georgia government and shall be in the unclassified service of the State Merit System of Personnel Administration. Assistant public defenders are at-will employees and serve at the pleasure of the Circuit Public Defender. The qualified applicant will have 5 or more years of criminal law experience, preferably with an emphasis on indigent defense representation, and with demonstrated litigation skills. Salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include health, dental and life insurance; retirement; and professional membership fees depending on budget availability. Training and continuing education will be provided through the Georgia Public Defender Standards Council as well as professional organizations, such as NACDL and GACDL.
