Assistant Public Defender II

The central Appellate Division of the Georgia Public Defender Standards Council is seeking an experienced appellate attorney to provide exceptional representation to our clients in the trial and appellate courts. The Division represents indigent defendants from the motion for new trial stage through the end of the direct appeal. The successful applicant for this position must show a demonstrated commitment to criminal indigent defense and appellate advocacy.   Travel throughout the state is required.

Preferred qualifications include:

  •  At least four years of criminal defense litigation experience, of which two years involved extensive brief writing;
  • Strong issue identification, research, writing and oral advocacy skills;
  • A demonstrated intellect and commitment to zealous and comprehensive indigent defense;
  • Ability to work independently and effectively manage a diverse caseload;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment;
  • Ability to quickly and accurately provide research and drafting assistance to other attorneys in the office and field public defenders; and
  • Ability to supervise and mentor attorneys and law students.

Investigator II

The Metro Capital Defender Office has an opening for a full-time Mitigation Investigator, representing indigent defendants in state capital cases at the trial level.  The Mitigation Investigator works with attorneys and fact investigators as part of a client team and is primarily responsible for conducting comprehensive fact-based investigations to develop and prepare evidence to be presented in the penalty phase of capital cases. The Mitigation Investigator identifies, locates and interviews a variety of witnesses; identifies, collects and reviews a vast array of records; identifies and analyzes issues in the case; prepares independent reports concerning the life history of the client, and assists attorneys in identifying appropriate expert witnesses, and preparing evidence and witnesses to present to the jury.  The Mitigation Investigator must be able to organize and prioritize workload to manage cases efficiently; adjust to workload changes; work within a team and under stress to meet deadlines.

Applicants must meet the required minimum qualifications and it is preferred to have at least two years of experience in criminal and/or capital litigation.  Knowledge of social history and mental health issues in the context of capital trials is also preferred.  Applicants must hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel extensively throughout Georgia and out of state.  Deadline:  March 31, 2015.

Assistant Public Defender III

The Metro Capital Defender Office has an opening for two full-time Assistant Public Defender III positions (2nd Chair) representing indigent defendants in state capital cases at the trial level.  The APD III works with the lead attorney and fact investigators and mitigation investigators as part of a client team and is primarily responsible for assisting the lead counsel in zealously representing indigent capital defendants at the trial level and sometimes in appellant proceedings. This representation of clients will include but is not limited to oral and written advocacy, legal research and writing, client and family interviews, plea negotiations with prosecutors, interaction with court staff and staff at government and private organizations, and consultation with a variety of experts (mental health, forensic, etc.). The Staff Attorney must be able to organize and prioritize workload to manage cases efficiently; adjust to workload changes; work within a team and under stress to meet deadlines.  Must be a member in good standing of the State Bar.  Preferred qualifications are a  combined three years of criminal trial experience either as a criminal defense attorney or a prosecuting attorney; and must have been lead or co-counsel in at least one (non-death penalty) murder trial to verdict, or in at least two felony jury trials. The Middle Georgia Regional Office of the Georgia Capital Defender has an opening for a full-time Assistant Public Defender III (co-counsel) representing indigent defendants in state capital cases at the trial level.  Applicants should have a strong interest in capital defense work, be client centered and able to work in a team environment (i.e.  team representation).  The preferred qualifications are a minimum of 3 years of criminal trial experience, including (1) being lead or co-counsel in at least one (non-death penalty) murder trial to verdict or (2) two felony jury trials to verdict. Capital litigation experience is a preferred.
