Position: Second Chair Capital Defender/Assistant Public Defender III
Location: Georgia Capital Defender—Macon, Georgia

The Middle Georgia Regional Office of the Georgia Capital Defender has an opening in the for a second chair eligible attorney representing indigent defendants in state capital cases at the trial level.

Requirements: Applicants must have a strong interest in capital defense work and client centered, team representation, as well as a minimum of 3 years of criminal trial experience, including (1) being lead or co-counsel in at least one (non-death penalty) murder trial to verdict or (2) two felony jury trials to verdict.  Counsel must be a member in good standing of the Georgia Bar or eligible to waive into admission to the Georgia Bar. Capital litigation experience is preferred.

The position offers an opportunity to work out of the Middle Georgia Regional Office in Macon, Georgia. Full state benefits.   Salary range is commensurate with experience within the salary range of Assistant Public Defender III.

Position: Appellate Level Staff Attorney
Location:  Southeast, South and Southwest Georgia

The Georgia Public Defender Standards Council (GPDSC) seeks qualified candidates for employment in its Appellate Division as staff attorneys/assistant public defenders to represent indigent clients from their motions for new trial through direct appeal from criminal convictions.  The Division handles appellate litigation conflicted out of local public defender offices and provides legal advice as well as technical assistance and training to field public defenders who require assistance in appellate matters.  Attorneys assigned to the Appellate Division are responsible for handling appellate cases of varied complexity from criminal convictions in superior courts throughout Georgia. The successful applicant is expected to be engaged in, inter alia, selection of appellate issues, tailoring issues for the motion for new trial and appeal, appellate brief writing and coordination, and presenting oral argument.  The work of the Appellate Division provides excellent opportunities for attorneys to enhance their knowledge of substantive criminal law, hone their oral advocacy skills, and perfect their legal writing.

Selected candidates will be based in one of four designated circuit public defender offices in southeast, south and southwest Georgia while directly reporting to the central Appellate Division located in downtown Atlanta.

Minimum Qualifications:  Candidates for these opportunities must possess the following qualifications:

  • Be a member in good standing of the State Bar of Georgia and admitted to the bars of both appellate courts;
  • Either have at least three years experience in criminal law, with at least two recent years of active practice involving appellate defense work; and demonstrate a committed interest in practicing criminal law as well as exceptional legal research, writing, and advocacy skills;
  • Possess strong research and writing skills;
  • Have a strong working knowledge of criminal law, criminal defense procedures, court practices and procedures, legal codes and precedents, client file maintenance, internet search methods, and Georgia criminal law;
  • Abilities to manage a considerable docket of active cases and consistently satisfy deadlines in the face of competing time demands are essential functions of the position.  The selected candidate must be able to demonstrate these skills and perform these functions with minimal direction from supervisory attorneys.
  • Be both personally and professionally willing to provide competent, zealous and effective advocacy and representation on behalf of criminal defendants in their direct appeal;
  • Be able to communicate and interact with clients, the public, colleagues and judicial system personnel.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Have prior experience in representing indigent defendants in a public defender office or as a Court Appointed attorney, or internship doing the same.

Interested candidates must submit:

  1. A current resume and cover letter specifying any criminal appellate or trial experience;
  2. A writing sample (brief and supporting documents of no more than 25 pages);
  3. An essay explaining (1) why you are interested in working for the GPDSC Appellate Division, (2) describing anything in your background, your training, your interests, or your experience which inclines you toward criminal law, and (3) describing anything in your background, your training, your interests, or your experience which reflects an interest or facility in legal research and writing in general and in criminal appellate practice.  This essay may be included within the cover letter.
  4. Three written letters of reference (including name, address and phone number) from individuals who have reviewed the candidates written work and professional performance.  These must be sent directly to the agency.
  5. A statement as to his or her preferred geographical region.
