Job Description and Requirements:
The Georgia Capital Defender (GCD), is a division of the Georgia Public Defender Standards Council. It is a government funded law office with statewide jurisdiction engaged exclusively in the representation of individuals facing the death penalty in Georgia. Attorneys, mitigation experts, investigators and paralegals on staff represent individual clients in pre-trial, trial, and direct appeal proceedings, co-counsel cases with local appointed counsel, and consult with attorneys who have capital cases. In addition to the direct representation and consultation work on individual cases, GCD sponsors periodic training conferences covering various aspects of litigation useful for capital trial lawyers and publishes a quarterly trial practice supplement distributed free of charge to capital defense lawyers.
GCD seeks to hire a two-year fellow to start work in August-September 2008. The fellowship position offers a young attorney the unique opportunity to work under the supervision and guidance of senior attorneys on capital cases at the trial level for a two year period. During this time, the fellow will work under the direct supervision of a senior trial counsel and a mitigation specialist assisting with all aspects of capital trial preparation, including investigation for both phases of the case, formulating trial strategy, preparing and litigating motions, pre-trial hearings and conducting actual trials.

Position: Appellate Attorney Position

Job Description and Requirements:
The Georgia Capital Defender is currently accepting applications for the position of staff attorney in the appellate division. Appellate counsel is responsible for all direct appeals from convictions in which the death penalty was imposed. Appellate counsel also serves as a resource to trial attorneys, assisting with pretrial matters including motions, interlocutory appeals, and interim appeals under the Georgia Unified Appeal Procedure. Appellate counsel may also be called upon to serve as faculty for State training seminars.
Applicants must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia or must be willing to take the Georgia bar exam upon accepting the position. Applicants must have a minimum of three years criminal trial experience and must have experience as counsel of record in at least three felony appeals. We are seeking attorneys with a demonstrated commitment to indigent defense who will provide zealous, high quality, client-centered representation. Applicants with capital experience are preferred. Two year minimum commitment requested.
Salary is commensurate with experience. Full State benefits are applicable.

Job Description and Requirements:
The Macon Satellite Office of the Georgia Capital Defender has an immediate opening for a first chair qualified attorney, pursuant to the Unified Appeal Procedure. Must be a member in good standing of the Georgia Bar with significant felony trial experience. Duties include direct representation of clients in cases in which the death penalty is begin sought, primarily in South Central and South West Georgia, as well as normal supervision of case teams, including attorney and mitigation team members, travel to and from court, etc.
Starting salary $75 - 85K, depending on level of experience, with full state benefits.
