Psychiatric Medications

Anti-anxiety

These medications can treat but are not limited to, PTSD, Anxiety Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, Panic Attacks and Phobias. Several related symptoms include, anxiety out of proportion to the stressor, anxiety related to a specific object or situation, behavior that has to continually be repeated to satisfy the individual, anxiety related to a past event.

Ativan ( Lorazepam) –used to relieve anxiety, can be habit-forming.

Azene, ClorazeCaps, ClorazeTabs, GenENE, Tranxene, Tranxene-SD (Clorazepate) - used to relieve anxiety. It also is used to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal as well as seizures.

Buspar (Buspirone) - used to treat anxiety disorders or in the short-term treatment of symptoms of anxiety.

Librium (Chloridiazepoxide) - used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal.

Klonopin (Clonazepam) - used to control seizures and to relieve anxiety.

Valium (Diazepam) - used to relieve anxiety, muscle spasms, and seizures and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal.

Xanax (Alprazolam) - used to treat anxiety disorders and panic attacks.

Anticholenergic  

These medications can treat but are not limited to the treatment of side effects of antipsychotic medications.  

Artane (Trihexyphenydyl) - used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease and tremors caused by other medical problems or drugs.

Akineton (Biperiden) - can be used to control severe reactions to certain medicines such as reserpine (e.g., Serpasil) ( medicine to control high blood pressure) or phenothiazines, chlorprothixene (e.g., Taractan), thiothixene (e.g., Navane), loxapine (e.g., Loxitane), and haloperidol (e.g., Haldol) ( medicines for nervous, mental, and emotional conditions).

Cogentin (Benzotropine)- Benztropine mesylate is used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease and tremors caused by other medical problems or drugs.

Kemadrin (Procyclidine)- can beused to control severe reactions to certain medicines such as reserpine (e.g., Serpasil) ( medicine to control high blood pressure) or phenothiazines, chlorprothixene (e.g., Taractan), thiothixene (e.g., Navane), loxapine (e.g., Loxitane), and haloperidol (e.g., Haldol) ( medicines for nervous, mental, and emotional conditions).

Parlodel (Bromocriptine)- Bromocriptine blocks release of a hormone called prolactin from the pituitary gland. Prolactin affects milk production. Bromocriptine is used to stop milk production in some women or men who have abnormal milk leakage in some cases due to the adverse effects of medication.

Antidepressants

These medications can treat but are not limited to Depressive Disorders, Bi-Polar (Manic-Depressive), and features including Catatonic, and Atypical. A number of antidepressants are approved to treat anxiety disorders. Several related symptoms include sad mood, diminished interest, weight change, increase or decrease in sleep needed, loss of energy, problems concentrating, thoughts of death.  

Adapin, Sinequan (Doxepin)- an antidepressant, is used to treat depression and anxiety.

Anafranil (Clomipramine) - an antidepressant, is used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorders.

Asendin (Amoxapine) - an antidepressant, is used to treat depression.

Aventyl (Nortriptyline)- an antidepressant, is used to treat depression

Celexa (Citalopram) – is used to treat mental depression.

Cymbalta (Duloxetine) - is used to treat depression. Duloxetine is also used to treat pain and tingling caused by diabetic neuropathy.

Desyrel (Trazodone) - used to relieve mental depression and depression that sometimes occurs with anxiety, can act like a sedative.

Effexor, Effexor XR (Venlafaxine) - used to treat depression, generalized anxiety disorder ( excessive worrying that is difficult to control ) and social anxiety disorder ( extreme fear of interacting with others or performing in front of others that interferes with normal life).

Elavil, (Amitriptyline) - used to treat symptoms of depression.

Lexapro (Escitalopram) – Second generation Celexa, used to treat depression and generalized anxiety disorder (excessive worrying that is difficult to control ).

Ludiomil ( Maprotiline) - used to relieve mental depression, including anxiety that sometimes occurs with depression.

Luvox (Fluvoxamine) - used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder ( bothersome thoughts that won't go away and the need to perform certain actions over and over).

Marplan (Isocaroxazid) - an antidepressant, is used to treat depression.

Norpramin (Desipramine) - an antidepressant, is used to treat depression.

Pamelor ( Nortriptyline) - an antidepressant is used to treat depression.

Paxil (Paroxetine) - used to treat depression, panic disorder (sudden, unexpected attacks of extreme fear and worry about these attacks ), and social anxiety disorder (extreme fear of interacting with others or performing in front of others that interferes with normal life).

Pertofane (Desipramine) - an antidepressant, is used to treat depression.

Prozac (Fluoxentine) - is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder ( bothersome thoughts that won't go away and the need to perform certain actions over and over ), some eating disorders, and panic attacks (sudden, unexpected attacks of extreme fear and worry about these attacks).

Remeron (Mirtazapine) - an antidepressant or mood elevator, is used to treat depression

Serzone (Nefazadone) - used to treat mental depression. Causes serious problems with the liver.

Sinequan (Doxepin) - an antidepressant, is used to treat depression and anxiety.

Surmontil (Trimipramine) - is used to treat depression.

Trofranil (Imipramine) - an antidepressant, is used to treat depression and Panic Disorder.

Vivactil (Protriptyline) - is used to treat depression.

Wellbutrin (Bupropion) - Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin XL) is used to treat depression, sometimes used to treat bipolar depression and attention deficit disorder.

Zoloft (Sertraline) - is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (bothersome thoughts that won't go away and the need to perform certain actions over and over), panic attacks (sudden, unexpected attacks of extreme fear and worry about these attacks), posttraumatic stress disorder (disturbing psychological symptoms that develop after a frightening experience), and social anxiety disorder (extreme fear of interacting with others or performing in front of others that interferes with normal life).

Antihistamines  

These medications can treat but are not limited to the treatment of side effects of medication.

Antivert (Meclizine) - is used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting, and dizziness caused by motion sickness.

Benadryl (Diphenhydramine)- used to relieves red, irritated, itchy, watery eyes; sneezing; and runny nose caused by allergies. It also may relieve the itching and minor skin irritation, also used to prevent and treat motion sickness, induce sleep, and relieve cough caused by minor throat or airway irritation.

Dramamine (Dimenhydrinate) – used to relieve or prevent the symptoms of allergies.

Phenergan (Promethazine) – used to relieves itchy, red, irritated, watery eyes; runny nose; sneezing; and itchy skin caused by allergies. It is also used for motion sickness, before and after surgery as a sedative to relieve apprehension, and to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting.

Vistaril (Hydroxyzine) - used to relieve the itching caused by allergies and to control the nausea and vomiting caused by various conditions, including motion sickness. It is also used for anxiety and to treat the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.

Antimanic  

These medications can treat but are not limited to Bi-Polar Disorder, manic episodes. Several related symptoms include unusually cheerful, irritable mood, inflated self-esteem, and decreased need for sleep, talkative, flight of ideas, distractibility, and excessive involvement in pleasurable activities with high negative consequences.

Cibalith-S (Lithium Citrate) - is used to treat bipolar disorder (extreme mood changes from depression or anger to elation).

Depakote (Divalproex Sodium, Valproic Acid ) – Depakote ER- used, alone or with other drugs, to treat certain types of seizures in the treatment of epilepsy. It is also used to prevent migraine headaches and to treat various psychiatric illnesses, such as bipolar disorder and aggression.

Eskalith (Lithium Carbonate)- is used to treat people with bipolar disorder (extreme mood changes from depression or anger to elation).

Lamictal (Lamotrigine) - is used to treat certain types of seizures in patients who have epilepsy or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a disorder that causes seizures and often causes developmental delays). It is used to increase the time between episodes of depression, mania (frenzied or abnormally excited mood), and other abnormal moods in patients with bipolar I disorder (manic depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods).

Lithane, Lithobid (Lithium Carbonate) - is used to treat people with bipolar disorder (extreme mood changes from depression or anger to elation).

Tegratol (Carbamazepine) - used alone or in combination with other medications to treat certain types of seizures in patients with epilepsy. Carbamazepine extended-release capsules (Equetro brand only) are used to treat episodes of mania (frenzied, abnormally excited or irritated mood) or mixed episodes (symptoms of mania and depression that happen at the same time) in patients with bipolar I disorder (manic depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods).

Topomax (Topiramate) - is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.

Antipsychotics  

These medications can treat but are not limited to Schizophrenic Disorders, Delusional Disorder, and Psychotic Disorders. Several related symptoms include, disorganized speech, grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior, delusions, hallucinations, absence of insight, restricted emotional expression, restricted fluency and productivity of thought and speech.

Abilify (Aripiprazole)- is used to treat schizophrenia. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.

Clozaril, Fazaclo (Clozapine ) - is used to treat schizophrenia in patients where other medicine has not worked.

Compazine (Prochlorperazine )- It also is used to treat psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and hostility, additionally it can assist in anxiety.

Daxolin, Loxitane (Loxapine) - is used to treat psychotic disorders and symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility.

Etrafon (Perphenazine, Trilafon ) is an antipsychotic drug of intermediate-potency. Used in the treatment of disorganized and psychotic thinking. Also used to help treat false perceptions ( e.g. hallucinations or delusions ).

Geodon (Ziprasidone) - is used to treat schizophrenia. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.

Haldol (Haloperidol)- is used to treat psychotic disorders and symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility and to control muscular tics of the face, neck, hands, and shoulders. Has a sedative quality to it.

Lidone (Molindone, Moban ) is an anti psychotic drug of intermediate-potency. Used in the treatment of disorganized and psychotic thinking, and hallucinations or delusions.)  

Loxitane (Loxapine) - is used to treat psychotic disorders and symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility.

Mellaril (Thioridazine)- is used to treat schizophrenia and symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility.

Moban (Molindone)- is used to treat schizophrenia and symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility.

Navane (Thiothixene)- is used to treat schizophrenia and symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility.

Orap (Pimozide) is an antipsychotic drug of high-potency. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. Only used when client does not respond to other drugs.

Permitil, Prolixin (Fluphenazine)- is used to treat schizophrenia and psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility.

Risperdal (Risperidone) - is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia ( a mental illness that causes disturbed or unusual thinking, loss of interest in life, and strong or inappropriate emotions) . It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.

Serentil (Mesoridazine) - is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia and reduce restlessness, anxiety, and tension. It can also reduce hyperactivity and uncooperativeness.

Seroquel (Quetiapine)- is used to treat psychotic disorders and symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility.

Stelazine (Trifluoperazine) - is used to treat schizophrenia and symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility. It is also used short-term to treat anxiety in some patients.

Taractan (Chlorprothixene) - is used in the treatment of nervous, mental, and emotional conditions.

Thorazine (Chlorpromazine) - is used to treat psychotic disorders and symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility. It also is used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting.

Trilafon (Perphenazine) - is used to treat schizophrenia and symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility.

Zyprexa (Olanzapine)- is used to treat schizophrenia, it works by decreasing unusually high levels of brain activity.

This is not a definitive list of medications to treat mental illness however; it should assist you in your understanding of the medications and what they treat. As noted above not all medications are restricted to the classifications indicated.

Some medications have multiple uses and can be used across classifications. Individuals should consult their treatment providers or pharmacist about medication regimens both prescribed and over the counter.

Our Mission
The Office of the Mental Health Advocate (OMHA) was created by statute in 1996 to provide services to attorneys representing criminal defendants with mental health challenges. OMHA monitors cases in Georgia involving pleas of Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) and it directly represents a limited number of insanity acquittees.  We provide services state-wide as a way of assisting attorneys, the hospitals, and the courts in criminal cases involving mentally ill defendants.

NEW FACE IN THE OFFICE OF THE MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATE

Deborah R Baldwin, Attorney

The Office of the Mental Health Advocate welcomes its’ 2008 Spring volunteer, Ms. Deborah Baldwin as she starts an internship.
Ms. Baldwin comes to OMHA with a great deal of experience, as well as a passion for upholding the rights of the mentally ill. She has worked in the legal profession since 1988. Having trained as a legal executive, she qualified as an attorney in England in July 1996 and her background has been primarily in criminal and mental health law. She obtained an LLM in Medical Law from the University of Northumbria in 2005.
