Georgia
Public Defender Standards Council FY2005 Supplemental Budget
Request
ATLANTA,
GA --
The Georgia Public Defender Standards Council recently
submitted a modified Fiscal Year 2005 Supplemental
Budget Request to the House and Senate Appropriations
Committees. This modification was voluntary and based
on the identification of funds in the Standards Council
budget that would have otherwise lapsed at the end of
the fiscal year. In announcing the budget revision Mike
Mears , Director of the Standards Council said, "The adjustment
will not ef fect the operation of the new indigent defense
system." . The amendments to the budget adjusted the Standard Council's
request by removing excess a portion of the funds allocated
to for the four judicial circuits approved to opt out of
the statewide public defender system. Judicial The statutory
provision provide that circuits approved to opt out will
only receive a reduced allocation of state funds . The total
equivalent to the minimum salaries of the statutorily allocated
positions they would have received had they opted in to the
system. This adjustment reduced the budget requested of the
Standards Council from $32,242,096 to $31,208,043, a total
of $1,034,053 .
