Legislative Report #7 of the 2006 Georgia General Assembly

Only three legislative days remain for the 2006 legislative session, though rumors have it that the General Assembly may sine die on the 39th day.  Monday (3/27) will be the 38th legislative day.  The joint resolution for the council’s standard for removal of a circuit public defender for cause (SR 793) will be voted on by the House on Monday.  The council hopes to get the remaining bills on for day 39.

Regarding the FY07 budget, the conference committee has been appointed and have already begun meeting to come up with a final budget conference committee report.  The budget conferees are Sen. Jack Hill, Sen. Tommie Williams, Sen. Bill Stephens, Rep. Ben Harbin, Rep. Jerry Keen, and Rep. Mark Burkhalter.

Unfortunately, we were unable to get HB 391 out of the House Rules Committee in time.

As for the criminal justice bills, HB 1059 passed out of the Senate; however, since the House disagreed with the changes that the Senate made, a conference committee has been appointed.  They will meet over the weekend to come up with a final report.  The House conferees are: Rep. Jerry Keen, Rep. David Ralston, and Rep. Tim Bearden.  The Senate conferees are: Sen. Bill Hamrick, Sen. Dan Weber, and Sen. Seth Harp.

SB 583 did not receive a hearing in the House; however, there is still a chance that it may be attached to another bill.  We will keep you posted.
