9:00-10:30: The Law of Sentencing in Georgia

This session will examine the law governing sentencing in criminal cases in Georgia. Learn about mandatory minimums, first-offender consideration, parole eligibility, probation and other aspects of sentencing law.
10:45-12:15: Sentencing Advocacy and Alternatives to Incarceration
Presented by Douglas Ammar, The Georgia Justice Project
This session will examine the importance of preparing for sentencing early in the case. It will discuss things the lawyer can do to prepare for sentencing, alternatives to incarceration and how to find and afford them, and tips for sentencing advocacy, both written and oral.

1:30-2:30: Probation Revocation Hearings

This session will discuss the law governing probation revocation hearings and litigation advice for lawyers with clients facing probation revocation.
2:30-3:30: Collateral Consequences
Presented by Georgia Legal Services Program
This session will focus on the collateral consequences our clients face from criminal convictions so that you may properly advise them, including effects on public benefits, employment and education.
3:30-5:00: Immigration Consequences & Ethical and Professional Considerations
Presented by Brett Ladd, Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit Public Defender
This session will focus on immigration consequences to various outcomes in criminal cases, and information you need to know about your clients to help them make the right decision. This session will focus particularly on the attorney’s ethical and professional responsibilities to the client facing a change in their immigration status as a result of a criminal conviction. |
